Description
The Kokako has a haunting song and is more likely to be heard not seen. The Kokako has an obscure evolutionary relationship to all other birds. The Kokako is endemic to New Zealand and is recovering their numbers in managed populations around the North Island. All unmanaged populations are extinct. In 2017 it was reported there were apx 1595 breeding pairs, up from apx 330 breeding pairs in 1999. Well done to the people that have donated their time to achieve this amazing result. The blue wattles on this Kokako indicates it is the North Island Kokako. There is a South Island Kokako with orange wattles but it is in serious trouble as one has not been seen in years. There is a bounty of $10,000 for a recent photo of the South Island Kokako. Lets hope there is a small population in a remote corner of the country.
The Kokako was voted New Zealand Bird of the Year in 2016. Voting is in apx October/November every year and is always an exciting and heavily competed contest.
The Kokako sparkly decoration with feet was introduced in 2021.
This decoration is made of fabric, sequins, beads and coloured metallic threads. It is nice and light for posting. If you need to send them internationally we can do it for you. Handy information - The cost to send up to 10x NZ Bird sparkly decorations to the same international address is the same as sending 1x.
