Rediscovered in 1948 after being considered extinct for more than 50 years. One of the reason's it was thought to be extinct, is the Takahe may have been falsely identified as being a big fat pukeko by people not familiar with NZ bird species.The largest flightless NZ bird alive. It's closest relative (and same genius 'Notirnis) is the extinct White Gallinule an endemic bird from Lord Howe Island. Next closest relative is the Pukeko (genius Porphyrio). Takahe's are one of New Zealand's most endangered bird species and is challenging to modern conservation techniques. Endearing with their quirky ways (it can poo up to 8mtrs worth of poo a day) the Takahe has a loyal following of supporters who are determined to see it's long-term success. In 2011 the population of Takahe was apx 276. In 2023 the population of Takahe is apx 500. Well done Team Takahe.
The Takahe has never won Bird of the year. Voting is in apx October/November every year and is always an exciting and heavily competed contest. Vote Takahe this year in the bird of the year competition. You could be the deciding vote.
